In this course
Steve Lawrence appears in these course readings as co-author of a foundational 2001 paper on the Hollywood Stock Exchange (HSX) that demonstrated how distributed computational systems and crowdsourced prediction markets could outperform expert judgment—a key example of how algorithmic aggregation of collective intelligence challenges traditional authority. The citations use his work to ground arguments about emergent prediction capabilities and market-driven forecasting as alternatives to centralized decision-making, themes relevant to understanding how AI systems distribute cognition across networks rather than concentrating it. This is primarily a technical reference rather than a substantive presence in course arguments about art, society, or cybernetics.
