Jeff Sanders, in collaboration with Luciano Floridi, developed the method of "levels of abstraction" (LoAs) as an epistemological framework for analyzing complex systems in ways that are more intersubjective and socially constructible than traditional approaches. In this course, Sanders and Floridi's work appears to provide a methodological foundation for conceptual analysis and mathematical modeling of phenomenological systems—a crucial tool for thinking through how we represent and understand artificial systems without falling into rigid individualism or psychologism. This abstraction method becomes relevant to discussions of AI and cybernetics where different descriptive levels are needed to capture both the technical and social dimensions of computational systems.
