Thomas Ligotti is a contemporary horror writer whose work explores cosmic pessimism and the existential dread produced by organic life's fundamental wrongness—particularly through grotesque fungal and parasitic imagery that collapses the boundary between the living and the inert. In the course readings, his fiction (especially "The Creep of Life") furnishes a literary vocabulary for theorizing the uncanny agency of nonhuman systems and the horror of being enmeshed in biological processes that exceed human comprehension or control. His work appears alongside discussions of emergence, distributed intelligence, and the ways AI and machine learning might amplify rather than resolve the alienation already embedded in our relationship to matter itself.
