René Girard was a French theorist of mimesis and violence whose concept of mimetic desire—the idea that we unconsciously imitate the desires of others, often leading to conflict—provides a framework for understanding social cascades and status contagion in digital networks. Peter Thiel, his Stanford student, applied Girardian theory to analyze how platforms like Facebook operate through mimetic mechanisms, where status hierarchies and desire-following create both social adhesion and potential collapse.
