Giordano Bruno

In this course

Bruno appears in the genealogy of combinatorial systems—his recombinatory wheels are positioned as conceptual ancestors to modern algorithmic logic trees and predictive systems that undergird contemporary machine learning and code design. His work represents an early attempt to systematize knowledge through mechanical manipulation of symbols, a fundamental operation that connects Renaissance hermetic philosophy directly to the computational paradigms examined in this seminar. By tracing Bruno through this lineage, the course suggests that AI's logical structures inherit not just from mathematics or engineering, but from esoteric traditions of infinite universe-making and symbol recombination.

Background

Giordano Bruno was an Italian philosopher, Dominican friar and priest, poet, alchemist, astronomer, cosmological theorist, and esotericist. He is known for his cosmological theories, which conceptually extended to include the then-novel Copernican model. He practised Hermeticism and took a mystical approach to exploring the universe. He proposed that the stars were distant suns surrounded by their own planets (exoplanets), and he raised the possibility that these planets might foster life of their own, a cosmological position known as cosmic pluralism. He also insisted that the universe is infinite and can have no centre.
